Self-compassion is an antidote to self-pity. While self-pity says, “poor me,” self-compassion recognizes that life is hard for everyone.
Self-Compassion Is Not Self-Indulgence: In our attempt to be good to ourselves, we may overindulge in unhealthy activities that please us. At the same time, self-compassion is about taking care of our health and not indulging in sensual pleasure or emotional gratification.
Self-Compassion Is Not Self-Esteem: Self-esteem is about feeling good about ourselves based on our perceived value. Self-compassion guides us to care for ourselves healthily.
Self-compassion can lead to healthy self-esteem, but they’re not the same.
Do We Need Mindfulness or Self-Compassion? I would say both because,
Mindfulness is a core component of self-compassion. Mindfulness and self-compassion allow us to live with less resistance toward ourselves and our lives. If we can fully accept that things are painful and be kind to ourselves, we can be with the pain more quickly.
Mindfulness focuses primarily on acceptance of the experience itself. Self-compassion focuses more on caring for the occasion.
Mindfulness asks, “What am I experiencing right now?” Self-compassion asks, “What do I need right now?”
Mindfulness says, “Feel your suffering with spacious awareness.” Self-compassion says, “Be kind to yourself when you suffer.”
